Are any projects out there sewing nanotags onto birds out there with a couple of stitches instead of just using super glue? If so, please reply back to me with your species and success rate (if known).
Thank you,

Hi Glenn,
We glued them on a GPS tag with super glue. Thats works perfect! Holohil tags doesn’t glue well with super glue on the GPS tags.
René

Yes, they’ve been stitched on to terns. I’ll see if I can find the manucripts.

We had poor results gluing tags on Black Terns – even though attachment seemed fine on release (and glue was dry/bonded), most birds lost the tags within a few days and we ended up switching to a back-pack harness. In contrast, colleagues have had great success gluing tags on shorebirds. Maybe it’s a species-specific thing?
Michelle – I’d be interested as well if you can find the refs on stitching tags to terns. Thanks!

How did you glue them, Dave? On a tail feather?

Hi folks,
We have been using a glue and suture technique to attach nanotags to Common and Roseate terns since 2013. I have attached my dissertation here - chapter 2 focuses on tag retention and fledge success of adult Common Terns tagged during the breeding period.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like any additional information.
All the best,
Pam
