Interactive Display Suggestions

Hi all! Apologies in advance if I’m missing where this may have been discussed previously. Feel free to point me to previous conversations if you know of any!

We are looking to install a new Motus station at an elementary school in Florida (an environmentally focused school). We’re expecting to collect some meaning data, and we want to make this viewable / explorable by the students at the school. Are there any recommended interactive setups for letting people interact with the data (tablet on a kiosk stand, commercial interactive display, raspberry pi, anything)? These students would span grades K-8; a wide range of knowledge and understanding.

Thanks very much for any thoughts you may have!

Hi,

Rich Schramm, Oregon US, developed a Motus Kiosk he shared with us in the PNW Motus Region, and he also presented at our western working group PIF meeting in 2023. I believe you can likely find Rich’s contact and materials online but I will also let Rich know to check this post asap. Cheers,

William Blake PNW Motus Coordinator

As William mentioned, I have written a Kiosk application which is available as a free opensource project on github at GitHub - rschramm9/MOTUS_KIOSK: V6 Kiosk for Motus receivers suitable for a nature center or wildlife refuge visitor center. Feel free to reach out to me for more information.

Also, did you explore the “Educator Resources” section of the Motus.org “Community” section? Since you are targeting grades K-8 within a school, perhaps the official Motus Dashboard with a teacher or librarian’s guidance and with those educational resources would be a richer educational experience. An unguided individual kiosk interaction, especially for students in the lower grades would be kind of hit or miss. Im happy to discuss pros and cons of the kiosk experience and assist at any time.

Thank you! Unfortunately, the school isn’t resourced to offer staff to guide students, which is why I’m considering ways to approach it with the assumption no adults are present.

I’m thinking maybe just an industrial tablet on a stand using a browser with no ability to type in new web addresses and blocked navigation away from the MOTUS site. That potentially resets to the explore interface on a regular interval.

Then the MOTUS_KIOSK I mentioned in my earlier post meets those stated requirements for a standalone, unsupervised kiosk once it is deployed. It has been deployed successfully at several nature centers and wildlife refuges. While it is normally deployed on a dedicated PC with at touchscreen at the sites - you can test drive a working web hosted version for one such site at the link below.
