From Data to Action: Leveraging Motus for Inclusive Bird Conservation

From Data to Action: Leveraging Motus for Inclusive Bird Conservation Feb 17, 8am-12:30pm Language: English & Spanish

Description: This workshop will tackle a critical challenge in conservation technology: overcoming barriers to the use, expansion, and benefits of the Motus Wildlife Tracking System in Central and South America. Motus is a powerful tool for tracking bird movements, yet social, financial, and technical obstacles often limit its adoption and impact. Our goal is to identify these barriers and co-create practical solutions with participants. The session will feature two dynamic components: Motus in Action: An overview of Motus coverage in the region, highlighting real-world challenges faced by bird monitoring practitioners and decision-makers in using the technology, expanding the network, and leveraging its data. Bird Conservation & Inclusion: A presentation on Conserva Aves, an initiative partly funded by the Government of Canada, which integrates Motus for data-driven decisions, applies a Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) framework to reduce gender, social, and financial barriers, enabling inclusive conservation at the subnational level.

Participants will also engage in interactive activities, sharing experiences, and designing actionable strategies to involve stakeholders from local communities to international organizations. Through presentations, participatory learning with the technology and tools, group work, and case study simulations, attendees will deepen their understanding of Motus and GESI principles and apply them to real-world contexts. Aligned with ICTC’s mission to unite diverse people, tools, and ideas for transformative conservation, this workshop fosters knowledge exchange and addresses often-overlooked social barriers. By doing so, we ensure that innovations like Motus achieve the scale and impact needed to protect biodiversity hotspots and inform decisions at all levels.
