External GPS not setting clock - Multiple stations

Hi everyone, here in Colombia we have a bunch of stations using Sensorgnomes with an external GPS e.g. an Adafruit GPS Hat with 3 m long wire that threads on to an external connection. It seems that recently (since August last year???), the external GPSs are no longer setting the clock and therefore no data is being collected. We are running the 2018 software release for Rasberry Pis.

Has anyone else run into this problem recently. Has there been a change in the information transmitted by satellites? I have tried several GPS units on several Rasberry Pis but to no avail. In contrast, the units we have with an internal Adafruit GPS are working fine.

If there is a software update that works round this, I would love to know.

Thanks,

Nick

Hi Nick, GPS hasn’t changed and since you are using the 2018 software nothing there has changed either. I’m not so familiar with how the old version worked.

I’m a bit confused about what you’re trying because you mention “Adafruit GPS HAT with 3m long wire” The long wire implies that you are using an “active” antenna, which means that it has an amplifier built-in which requires power. I do not believe that the GPS HAT provides power, it needs a “passive” antenna, but please double-check (I’m at the AOS conference so don’t have a lot of time). If you need an external antenna you may be better off buying a USB-attached one. I’m sure it can be made to work, but I don’t know whether it “just works” with the old software. I hope this helps a little…
